Have you ever heard silence?
If you have, you must know how unbearable life can become without it!
In this fast-paced modern world, silence can leave us behind. But choosing to have quiet and silent moments is not a weakness. It can also be wise to do so.
We want to do too many things in a short period. We do not want to stay behind in the rat race. We have made ourselves accustomed to the cacophony of different noises around us. If we shut out those noises, we might start feeling out of place.
Ironically, we believe in making a difference and yet work very hard to be like everyone else. We often have a breakdown due to our exhausting routines, and it is then that we need silence the most.
Although we know its worth, we hardly incorporate it into our practices.
Perhaps, a little less noise could fix the matter.
But what can silence do for us?
1. Silence can make us listen to what deserves our attention
Often, we get so caught up with our daily routine that it makes us ignore our health, our dreams, and sometimes, even our families.
When our minds remain engrossed with what is regular, we tend to neglect things that need to be valued by us.
Silence can often wake us up to this fact. It can help us indulge in self-care rituals and can help us make beautiful memories with our friends and families.
It helps us reflect on what carries meaning in our lives. We are able to set our priorities well when we focus on things with a silent mind.
Silence lets us concentrate on what we were unable to focus on before.
So, Keep calm. Find that solace. Focus!
2. Be Silent. Be patient.
Too many clashing noises gets on our nerves. Incessant noise can make us impatient, restless, annoyed and angry.
Yet, we hardly leave any slot for silence in our daily lives. Music is a beautiful thing. However, even music can be a little jarring on the ears if listened to just for the sake to cut down the silence.
Similarly, the volume of the television crackling day and night can steal the serene ambience that silence can provide us.
On most days, I wake up to the sounds buzzing from the television. Then I go to work in a car booming with music, work in a noisy open office with my mind preoccupied with a large number of pending tasks, come back home listening to the same loud music in the car, cook and sleep while the television is still on.
On such days, I remain mentally drained and irritable.
All I miss is the space for silence, the space for solitude where one can replenish and become more patient.
Silence helps us complete a task patiently and efficiently. It makes us complain less and be more grateful.
So, open up to silence and let go of the impatience.
3. Silence makes us think deeply
When we can focus well, we can think well.
Silence can allow us to think about a matter at hand in a far better way.
Of course, we think even when we are not silent. But silence makes us think deeply. Silence can help us reflect on things more wisely and make us more aware of life around us.
It can make us understand the significance of things we find trivial. It can also help us get over matters that are trivial and unimportant.
Silence helps us ponder upon our situations and make better decisions. It enhances our lives and shows us a path to fulfilment.
Everybody has things to think about all the time.
But silence helps us do it reasonably.
4. Silence makes us more creative
A relaxed mind that can think and focus well is bound to be more creative and productive.
When we work in silence, we tend to make fewer errors and mistakes than when we do the same thing in a noisy environment.
Silent surroundings enhance our decision making and help us solve a problem.
For creative development, silence can prove to be extremely helpful.
We can set our minds and thoughts flowing with ideas in a peaceful environment. Without any external disturbance, we can gradually envision the manifestation of what we are trying to create.
A silent surrounding can increase productivity. Even with a calm mind, we can create amazing things.
5. Silence works as a healing agent
The calmness that silence can provide us with can act as therapy. It rejuvenates our crowded minds and can help us revive ourselves.
With silence, we can regenerate our bodies and minds. It lowers blood pressure and improves our sleep.
Silence provides us with a sense of calm and can lead to extreme health benefits.
It helps us heal not just mentally and emotionally but physically too. As such silence, is a remedy for total well-being.
6. Silence helps us grow spiritually
Turning down all the sounds around us is not the silence we are trying to achieve here.
The silence that we are seeking is the silence of the mind.
We can only experience the beauty of silence; if we can distance the mind from all the thoughts that occupy it and keep running on and on inside it.
Silence carries us above material things and helps us live with a sense of calm.
Silence thus improves our meditation and helps us in our spiritual journey. It helps us grow spiritually and thus, enhances our lives in a wholesome manner.
So, give silence a little space in your life, and it will silently transform things for you.
CONCLUSION
Sound is as important as silence. We come across different kinds of sounds.
There is a purpose behind every sound we encounter.
Whether it is the honking of the car or the ringing of the telephone, sounds communicate something to us. They are all meant to inform us and are thus, necessary.
Similarly, natural sounds like the rippling of waves and thundering storms also give us some information.
Sounds have patterns, and when they break down and tune out, they can provide a space for silence.
Silence lets us listen to certain sounds more clearly, thus helping us understand things better.
We may not theoretically understand the power of silence but can experience and realise it.
If we nurture silence, it will nourish our lives in the long run.
For there is so much that silence can offer us. If only we could hear it!
